"The Wounded"

In the season four The Next Generation episode "The Wounded," we're introduced to the Cardassians, a species that has until recently been at war with the Federation and which will become very important in Deep Space Nine. Captain Benjamin Maxwell of the Phoenix has ordered his ship to carry out attacks inside Cardassian space and the Enterprise-D, along with Cardassian military observers on board the ship, pursue the Phoenix. We also learn more about Chief O'Brien's background and his involvement in the Cardassian War as he tries to deal with what he went through during a traumatic time.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss the powerful and important episode "The Wounded." We talk about our thoughts on the look of the Cardassian ships, uniforms, and the Cardassians themselves, O'Brien's struggle with his feelings toward a former enemy, and whether Maxwell is more motivated by exposing what the Cardassians are doing or by what happened to his family. We also discuss the theme of racism in the episode and what we learn about Picard's history and his diplomatic skills.

Mothers on TNG.

The characters on The Next Generation, whether regular characters or guest stars are shaped by the important people in their lives, including their parents. On the show, we see a number of different mothers and mother figures. Their interactions with their children and the crew help to reveal important aspects of their lives that we might not otherwise see and of parenting in the 24th century.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser take the opportunity as Mother's Day approaches in the United States to discuss the important mothers on The Next Generation and the impact that they have on their children and the show. The characters discussed are Lwaxana Troi, Deanna Troi, Beverly Crusher, Helena Rozhenko, Julianna Tainer, K’Ehleyr, Keiko O'Brien, Silva La Forge, and Guinan.

The Lost Episodes, Part I.

There are many scripts, script outlines, and episode and movie concepts that never made it onto the screen on The Next Generation. These lost episodes can provide a fascinating window into what might have been, what characters and concepts ended up being modified and used later, and into the behind-the-scenes writing process.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss two never-produced episodes of season one of The Next Generation. The script outlines discussed are "The Bonding" (featuring a different concept than the season 3 episode of the same name) and "Terminus." The Lost Episodes is a continuing series that will cover many unfilmed episodes and movie concepts over the course of the seven seasons and four movies of The Next Generation.
