Captain Jellico.

Captain Edward Jellico comes in like a whirlwind in the season 6 "Chain of Command" two-parter of The Next Generation to take command of the Enterprise-D during an important confrontation with the Cardassians. Jellico moves to implement a number of changes very quickly that leads to conflict with the crew, especially Commander Riker. What do we think of Jellico's command style, his effectiveness, and how the crew reacts to him?

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez and Justin Oser are joined by guest Ken Tripp of Standard Orbit to talk about their thoughts on Captain Jellico and his appearances in The Next Generation episodes "Chain of Command: Part I" and "Chain of Command: Part II." Topics discussed include a comparison between the command styles of Captain Jellico and Captain Picard, Jellico's effectiveness, the resistance that he receives from the crew,  and his working relationship with his two first officer, Riker and Data.

Weapons of TNG, Part 1.

The primary mission of the crew of The Next Generation is one of exploration. However, they need the means to defend themselves from any danger or combat situations that they encounter. Just about every species that they interact with also has weapons of various kinds at their disposal. What kinds of weapons do we see and what do the types and abilities of those weapons say about both Federation and non-Federations species?

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss the various weapons that are seen in the episodes and movies of The Next Generation and what insights we can gain from comparing Federation and non-Federation weapons. This episode focuses on hand weapons, including phasers, disruptors, and Klingon bladed weapons. There will be a second part in a future episode that discusses ship-based weapons.

The Lost Episodes, Part 4.

There are many scripts, script outlines, and episode and movie concepts that never made it onto the screen on The Next Generation. These lost episodes can provide a fascinating window into what might have been, what characters and concepts ended up being modified and used later, and into the behind-the-scenes writing process.
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss the never-produced episode "The Crystal Skull," which would have aired in season one. The Lost Episodes is a continuing series that will cover many unfilmed episodes and movie concepts over the course of the seven seasons and four movies of The Next Generation.

Pets of TNG.

Pets are an important part of many people's lives in the 21st century here on Earth, but how important are they to the characters of The Next Generation in the 24th century? Many Star Trek fans would name Data's cat Spot, but there are a lot more pets on the show that also make appearances and have an impact on the characters of The Next Generation.
In this episode of Earl Grey, host Justin Oser is joined by special guests Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson of Literary Treks to talk about the pets of The Next Generation. In the sixth season episode "Lessons," we're introduced to the head of Stellar Sciences on the Enterprise-D, Lieutenant Commander Nella Daren. In the course of this episode of The Next Generation, Picard and Daren fall in love, Picard shares with her the importance of his music from his experience in "The Inner Light," and the relationship eventually doesn't work out because of the worry of losing someone to the dangers of serving on a starship.

The discussion includes talking about what we love about Nella Daren and the Picard-Daren relationship, the possible perils of workplace romance, what Picard's music means to him, and the various scenes and moments in the episode that we enjoy.

Jennifer Edwards Interview.

Jennifer Edwards appeared as Alexander's teacher, Ms. Kyle, in the fifth season episode of The Next Generation "New Ground." Even though Ms. Kyle only appears in a few scenes in the episode, she makes a very memorable impression as a realistically portrayed teacher navigating the difficulties of a troubled student, Alexander, and his stern father, Worf.
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser, Amy Nelson, and Richard Marquez interview Jennifer Edwards about her role as the teacher Ms. Kyle in The Next Generation episode "New Ground." The discussion includes what it was like working on the set of a Star Trek show, talking about her father, writer-director-producer-actor Blake Edwards, and discussing how her character has been an inspiration to teachers.

Picard's Family.

In the acclaimed fourth season episode of The Next Generation entitled "Family," we finally get to meet members of Jean-Luc Picard's family in the form of his brother Robert, his sister-in-law Marie, and his nephew Rene on the Picard family vineyard in La Barre, France. What does this encounter tell us about Picard's upbringing and what family means to him? How do the other references to his family and the illusory family that we see throughout the series and in the movie Generations shed light on Picard's experiences and his hopes for family relationships?

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser and Amy Nelson are joined by special guest Joe Keegan to talk about the family (real and imaginary) of Jean Luc-Picard. Characters discussed include Robert Picard, Rene Picard, Marie Picard, Maurice Picard, Yvtette Picard, Picard's ancestors, Picard's Nexus family, Kamin's family, Beverly Picard from "All Good Things...," and Shinzon. We also touch upon what we would like to see of Picard's family in the new Picard series and what exactly defines family.

Remember Me.

The fourth season episode "Remember Me" is a very memorable entry of The Next Generation. Beverly Crusher is trapped in a warp bubble and faced with the traumatic situation of people on the Enterprise-D gradually disappearing until she's the only one left on the ship and the warp bubble universe is collapsing around her. "Remember Me" is one of a handful of episodes to focus on Beverly Crusher and it showcases an amazing performance by Gates McFadden.
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser and Amy Nelson are joined by special guest Shashank Avvaru of the PoliTreks podcast to talk about The Next Generation episode "Remember Me." Topics discussed include Beverly Crusher as the focus of the episode, how she handles the difficult challenges presented to her, and how Beverly Crusher's experience trying to get attention for what she's going through relates to the #MeToo movement.

Romulans in "The Enemy" and "The Defector."

The third season episodes "The Enemy" and "The Defector" aired within a few months of each other and provided the first episodes of The Next Generation to show Romulan characters in such depth. The Romulans appeared in The Next Generation in more episodes than in any other Star Trek series, but how much do we really know about this iconic species?
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser, Amy Nelson, and Richard Marquez are joined by special guest John Krikorian of the Trek Profiles podcast to talk about "The Enemy" and "The Defector" to uncover what we learn about the Romulans from these episodes. Topics discussed include why the Romulans seem to prefer deception and elaborate plotting, what the range of characters we see in the episodes tell us about Romulan behavior under different circumstances, and what we may be able to determine about Romulan culture.

"The Chase" and Panspermia.

"The Chase" is a sixth season episode of The Next Generation that answered a question many fans had wondered about over the years - why do so many of the species that we see in Star Trek look so similar? This question is answered when the pieces of a puzzle spanning many worlds and billions of years is revealed. A progenitor species found themselves alone in the galaxy four billions years ago and decided to seed many planets with life in the hope that the resulting intelligent species would one day connect and understand each other.
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser and Richard Marquez are joined by special guests Mike Wong and Elise Cutts of the Strange New Worlds: A Science and Star Trek Podcast to discuss "The Chase" and the science behind the idea of panspermia presented in the episode. Panspermia is the theory that life can be introduced in different environments because it was seeded from outer space, whether through natural objects (such as asteroids and comets) or through artificial means. We discuss the science behind panspermia, whether the idea presented in "The Chase" works from a scientific or a storytelling perspective, and how we could know if life on Earth was introduced from space.

The Lost Episodes, Part 2.

There are many scripts, script outlines, and episode and movie concepts that never made it onto the screen on The Next Generation. These lost episodes can provide a fascinating window into what might have been, what characters and concepts ended up being modified and used later, and into the behind-the-scenes writing process.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss two more never-produced episodes of season one of The Next Generation. The script outlines discussed are "The Neutral Zone" (featuring a different concept than the season one episode of the same name) and "Somewhen." The Lost Episodes is a continuing series that will cover many unfilmed episodes and movie concepts over the course of the seven seasons and four movies of The Next Generation.

"The Wounded"

In the season four The Next Generation episode "The Wounded," we're introduced to the Cardassians, a species that has until recently been at war with the Federation and which will become very important in Deep Space Nine. Captain Benjamin Maxwell of the Phoenix has ordered his ship to carry out attacks inside Cardassian space and the Enterprise-D, along with Cardassian military observers on board the ship, pursue the Phoenix. We also learn more about Chief O'Brien's background and his involvement in the Cardassian War as he tries to deal with what he went through during a traumatic time.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss the powerful and important episode "The Wounded." We talk about our thoughts on the look of the Cardassian ships, uniforms, and the Cardassians themselves, O'Brien's struggle with his feelings toward a former enemy, and whether Maxwell is more motivated by exposing what the Cardassians are doing or by what happened to his family. We also discuss the theme of racism in the episode and what we learn about Picard's history and his diplomatic skills.

These lost episodes can provide a fascinating window into what might have been, what characters and concepts ended up being modified and used later, and into the behind-the-scenes writing process.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss two never-produced episodes of season one of The Next Generation. The script outlines discussed are "The Bonding" (featuring a different concept than the season 3 episode of the same name) and "Terminus." The Lost Episodes is a continuing series that will cover many unfilmed episodes and movie concepts over the course of the seven seasons and four movies of The Next Generation.

"Schisms."

Insomnia. Disturbing memories. Mysterious disappearances. Creepy aliens. The sixth season episode "Schisms" is a frightening hour of television that taps into the fear of being abducted for experimentation by aliens that we're unable to understand.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by guest Clara Cook of Primitive Culture to discuss both the scary and the surprisingly funny parts of the episode "Schisms." From Riker's insomnia and bedhead to the creepy holodeck scene to alien clicking sounds to Data's hilariously dry poetry, we talk about what intrigues us about the episode and the many questions that it brings up.

Elizabeth Dennehy Interview.

Elizabeth Dennehy played Commander Shelby in two of the most important episodes in all of Star Trek, "The Best of Both Worlds" and "The Best of Both Worlds: Part II." This was one of her first TV roles and she made an immediate impression with fans for portraying Commander Shelby as an ambitious, no-nonsense expert on the Borg who frequently clashes with Commander Riker.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser, Amy Nelson, and Richard Marquez interview Elizabeth Dennehy about playing Commander Shelby in "The Best of Both Worlds" two-parter, including how she prepared for the role, what it was like to work with the cast, and which scene was the most difficult to do. We also discuss how the reception of Shelby has changed over time, her convention appearances, her many non-Star Trek roles, and her father - actor Brian Dennehy.

Although he only appeared in four episodes of The Next Generation, Gowron is one of the most unforgettable Klingon recurring characters that we see in the show. With his bulging eyes, threatening smile, and fighting prowess, Gowron becomes the Klingon Chancellor and appears during some of the most important moments in this period of the Klingon Empire.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss their impressions and thoughts on Gowron's appearances in The Next Generation and the importance of his character to the show. The Next Generation episodes discussed are "Reunion," "Redemption," "Redemption II," and "Rightful Heir." Courtroom Dramas, Part 2

Star Trek has a long history of episodes with courtroom dramas, going back to the first season episode "Court Martial" in The Original Series. The Next Generation continued that tradition with no fewer than nine examples of trials, hearings, or some sort of legal proceeding, with many of those episodes putting an unusual twist on the idea of the courtroom drama.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser conclude a two-part series about courtroom dramas on The Next Generation.Episodes covered in Part 2 are "Devil's Due," "The Drumhead, "The First Duty," and "All Good Things..."

Admiral Nechayev.

Admiral Alynna Nechayev appears in four episodes of seasons 6 and 7 of The Next Generation and two episodes of seasons 2 and 3 of Deep Space Nine. One of the most prominent female admirals in Star Trek, Nechayev is a strong and memorable character who is often seen clashing with Captain Picard.
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser and Richard Marquez are joined by special guest Brandi Jackola of Live from the Edge to discuss their impressions and thoughts on Admiral Nechayev's appearances and how her character develops over time. The Next Generation episodes discussed are "Chain of Command, Part I," "Descent," "Journey's End," and "Preemptive Strike."
